How AI Search Is Changing the Way Franchise Buyers Find Brands.

AI answers now sit above search results, and fewer searches end in a click. What that means for how franchise buyers discover brands, and what still works.

Fewer clicks, more answers

Search has changed. Instead of a list of links, many searches now return an AI-generated answer at the top of the page. Franchise Insights reports that fewer than a third of Google searches now lead to a click on a website (Franchise Insights, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). For franchise brands, that means a buyer researching a category may never see the familiar list of results where a development site used to appear.

What buyers are actually using

AI is changing search, but franchise buyers have not abandoned the tools they know. In a Franchise Insights survey of prospects in May 2026, 54.2% said Google search was among the most useful tools in their research, and 45.8% named franchise directory sites. AI Overviews and Google’s Gemini chatbot were each named by 12.5% (Franchise Insights, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).

The picture is one of transition. Buyers still search and still compare, but more of the first impression is now formed by an AI summary before anyone clicks.

What this means for franchise brands

Being the clear answer matters more. AI tools summarize information they can understand and trust. Destinations that explain a category clearly, consistently, and accurately give those tools something solid to work with.

Relevance is easier to recognize. A destination whose name and content match the category a buyer is researching sends a clear signal to people and to machines alike about what it covers.

Brand-name visibility is not enough. If AI answers summarize a category without naming your brand, being found by name will not reach the buyers forming their shortlist from that summary.

What still works

  • Clear category content. Plain explanations of what the business is, how it works, and who it suits.
  • Well-organized, credible information. Structured pages, accurate details, and consistent facts across your properties.
  • A strong destination to land on. When buyers do click, from search, an AI citation, or an ad, the page they reach has to answer their questions and make the next step easy.
  • Multiple paths. Search, directories, advertising, and AI each reach buyers differently; relying on one leaves gaps.

Where category destinations fit

A category destination is built around exactly what buyers research: the category itself. Its name, structure, and content all describe one concept clearly, which suits traditional search and the way AI tools look for authoritative sources. No destination can guarantee how an AI system will answer, but clear and credible category content is the strongest foundation available.

The bottom line

AI is reshaping the first moment of franchise discovery. The brands best positioned for it are the ones whose information is clear, credible, and organized around what buyers are actually looking for.
